Here lies the first united states radium factory in Orange, New Jersey, beginning around 1917. The Radium girls were female factory workers who contracted radiation poisoning from painting watch dials with self-luminous paint. Here is when everything goes down from here.
This situation is going out of hand.
Sally just came down with necrosis last night
We have to sue him because we have rights and this must be stopped
The women were constructed to point their brushes because using too much rags or water wasted too much time and the material. In order to point their brushes, they had to put the brushes on their lips to get a fine point. Some even painted their fingernails and teeth with the substance.
There is no evidence that these workers are exposed to radium
The women in the facility ingested deadly amounts of radium causing them to literally glow in the dark after each shift. Also, they experienced "radium jaw" which is caused by radium ingestion to the bones in the body., scientifically called Necrosis.
Five pf the women in New Jersey challenged their employer in a case over the right of individual workers who contract Necrosis to sue their employer, which at the time had a two year statue of limitations. This claim went public and many people were appalled by this news.
U.S Radium and other watch-dial companies rejected claims that the afflicted workers were suffering from exposure to radium. For some time, doctors and researchers complied with requests from the companies not to release their data.
But other doctors claim otherwise
The Radium Girls saga holds an important place in the history of both the field of health and the labor rights movement. The right of individual workers to sue for damages from corporations due to labor abuse established as a result of the Radium girls case. In the wake of the case industrial safety standards were eenhanced for many decades.
