  • The Cask of Amontillado
  • Tone
  • Word choice/diction
  • The narrator wants to get revenge on a man, so he suffocates him by trapping him in a niche. The narrator never got caught in a hundred years.
  • Imagery
  • The tone of this story is dark and creepy. It's dark because Montresor wants to get revenge on Fortunato for hurting him. It's creepy because the narrator makes awkward jokes that don't seem that bad util the end where you feel bad for laughing.
  • Symbolism
  • The word choice of this story is ironic because in the story the narrator says 'poor' friend' when he wanted to get revenge on him by killing him without getting caught.
  • Theme
  • The imagery of this story is very creepy because most if the story is in the catacombs where Montresor is going to get revenge.
  • The symbolism in this story is the carnival because Montresor uses it to harm really good Fortunato. Also, since most of the time carnivals are for joy, Montresor uses that to fool Fortunato.
  • The theme in the story is revenge because Montresor wants to get revenge on Fortunato for hurting him too much, so he makes a cynical, yet, clever plan to kill him.
