  • "Night" is a book written by Eliezer Wiesel about his experiences in the holocaust. The main character of Night is Eliezer, other characters include his father, Moishe the Beadle, Mier Catz, mrs. Schacher, and others. The book begins in the small village of Sighet, Transylvania. Eliezer is a jewish boy who wants to learn the language of Kabbalah, which is the language of mystics. He eventually gets Moishe to teach him, but the germans invade their town and force all foreign jews to leave.  Moishe later returns to tell the villagers that everyone but him was killed and buried in a mass grave, but no one believes him.
  • Falling action
  • All the jews are placed in a ghetto, they do not mind this because now their entire community is made up of Jews and they wont be looked at strangely by their neighbors. After being in a ghetto for a few months,  they are shipped to a concentration camp, however, they are told that it is nice their and the work is good. they are loaded up on cattle cars and shipped away. while on way up, they are not fed food or water or get potty breaks. Mrs. Schacher is one of the women on the train, and while she is riding, she gets visions of fire and flames. she starts screaming about these flames she sees but the other jews just find her annoying so they bind and gag her.
  • Exposition
  • The concentration camps are much worse than the jews expected, they are forced the do manual labor all day, get fed poor rations, and have very little clothing and none of their belongings. Upon arrival, the men and women were immediately separated, the women and small children were killed on the spot in gas chambers. Eliezer and his father were separated from his mother and sister, they stuck together and worked side by side.

  • VS.
  • Eliezer and his father have been at the concentration camp for around a year now, there is no hope in sight. Eliezer has been transported to at least 3 different camps and has seen children get hung. He has met Idek, an SS officer who is known for bouts of anger and madness and Meir Catz, who is an old friend of Eliezer's father and also saved Eliezer's life. Eliezer's father died after a long battle with dysentery, Eliezer had been looking after him for weeks and providing him with his rations. Eliezer states that he felt relived in a twisted way, because now he only has to take care of himself.
  • shortly after his father's death, the camp Eliezer is in is scheduled for liquidation, all the jews are to be exterminated. Eliezer is saved because he receives a tip from some adults and heads back to the barracks. the camp had previously been infiltrated by american spies. those spies chose then to reveal themselves and take over the camp, afterwards everyone still alive was liberated as an american tank arrived at the front gate. the first thing the freed jews did was chow down on whatever food they could stuff in their mouth. Eliezer looks at himself in a mirror and sees a shadow of his former self.
  • the first of the three major conflicts is Elizer's struggle with his religion, he feels like god has abandoned his people when times got tough and doubts his absolute judgement. the second is Elizer's struggle against the oppression of the Nazi soldiers, they are working him and starving him and forcing him to live in horrible circumstances. the final conflict is Elizer against the other prisoners, they are willing to kill each other for food, Elizer cannot rely on them for help.
