Since the Walls decided to settle down in Welch for the foreseeable future, Rex Jeanette and Brian begin to build the Glass Castle, although Brian and Jeanette are the ones who dig the actual foundation. Later on, Jeanette finds a giant rat, later named Rufus, bathing in a sugar bowl. Brian tries to deal with Rufus with a baseball bat it is Tinkle that kills the rat. Jeanette tries to make life better at 93 Little Hobart street by painting a portion of the house yellow. While the Walls were the poorest family on Little Hobart Stree, they did not accept handouts. Though the worst of the families on Little Hobart Street was the Pastors as Ginnie Sue Pastor had eight daughters and one son and Clarence Pastor had black lung and sits on their porch all day long. People claim that none of the Pastor kids was his because of Ginnie being the town whore. Jeanette mentions her life in California and is asked by the oldest Pastor kid, Kathy, to talk to her mom about it. Over plucking a chicken for dinner, Gunnie has the feeling that Jeanette would be the kind of girl who's one day going to be eating roast chicken and those on-fire deserts as much as she wanted.

Maureen finds a rat on the bed, Brian and Jeanette corner it and Tinkle, part Jack-Russell terrier caught it.

Rex and Rosemary refused to accept handouts or welfare.
Jeanette begins to make friends in Welch, even if they do have a pretty advanced case of head lice.
