  • The  nations capital originated in New York City
  • What if the nations capital was moved to a new city in the South?
  • Hamilton wanted to move the capital to the south because he needed to win the support of the southerners to pass the debt plan
  • Hamilton's plan pleased the southerners because people like Jefferson and Madison believed that the government would be more responsive to their wants
  • The nation capital was moved to a new location between Virginia and Maryland, and located on the Potomac River
  • Pierre L'Enfant was a french engineer  who drew up a plan for the new capitol. He was later fired by George Washington
  • Andrew Ellicott replaced Pierre L'Enfant. He was assisted by Benjamin Banneker, who helped with surveying work
  • The two redrew the plan, but kept much of the grand vision
