  • Glad we are a free state. 
  • As tensions rose the state of Missouri entered the union as a slave state, however the state of Maine entered as a free state. This helped keep the number of free and slave states equal.

  • The idea of popular sovereignty allowed the state of Kansas to vote as a slave sate along wit the state of Nebraska to vote as a free state.

  • As California entered as a free state of states of New Mexico, Utah would be decided by popular sovereignty. The Fugitive Slave Law also got a lot stricter.

  • I Abraham Lincoln promise to stop the spread of slavery.
  • The under ground railroad was a sires of tunnels that helped fleeing slaves get to the north, this is led my the abolitionist and women rights advocate Harriet Tubman.
  • Dred Scott was an African American slave that had been moved to the north where he was presumably free, however when he tried to leave they refused, he took this to the Supreme Court where he lost 7-2. They ruled that he was property, and the government could not take away property.
  • When Abraham Lincoln was elected in 1860 he promised to stop the spread of slavery, this raised tensions between the north and the south significantly.
