Mme. Loisel was a very beautiful woman but she and her husband were both very poor. She felt like she was meant for more but couldn't afford much.
Mme. Loisel is sad and mad because her husband got a formal invitation to a fancy ball, but she doesn't have any good clothes to wear.
Mme. Loisel shows up at the ball and everyone pays attention to her. Everyone wants to meet her, know exactly who she is, and dance with her.
Mme. Loisel gets back to her house and realizes that she lost Mme. Forestier's necklace and knew she had to get it back.
Mme. and Monsieur Loisel couldn't find it so they work to earn back the money to pay for a replacement necklace to give to Mme. Forestier.
Mme. Loisel runs into her friend after 10 years of hard work and finally tells her about what happened to her necklace. Her friend then tells her that the necklace was made of paste and wasn't worth near as much as the necklace she worked for.
