Hey kid, get me some food and a file to FREE me from my former BONDAGE!
Aah! Okay, I'll be right back!
PIP RECEIVES HIS GREAT EXPECTATIONS
Gee, thanks Mr. Jaggers!
Hello, Pip. I'm Mr. Jaggers. It's time to get your HANDS on some money, because you're getting a whole lot soon!
PIP MEETS HIS BENEFACTOR
So you see, Pip, I am the man from the marshes and I gave you all that money... HOW YOU LIKE ME NOW?
One day, Pip was out in the marshes when he met a convict who had escaped from the nearby hulks. He asked Pip for food and a file to take of the ball-and-chain around his leg, which symbolizes the motif of bondage and chains.
After the convict is found and brought back to jail, Pip receives a large sum of money from an anonymous benefactor. Mr. Jaggers tells Pip about this and tells him he must move to London. Pip agrees and comes along. The motif of hands also appears many times in Great Expectations, and we see an example here.
One day, when Pip has settled in in London, someone knocks on Pip's door. Pip opens it and sees the convict standing in the hallway! Pip invites the convict inside, and the convict tells Pip that the mysterious benefactor was the convict himself! Pip is very surprised but upset that he has been using a commoner's money this whole time.
