Storyboard Text

  • Hello, I'm Luther. I am a German monk, and a theologist. As a little boy, I have always wanted to lead a holy life for myself, and maybe my future children. I have grown up living around with what I thought was church corruption, as well.
  • But after a certain incident in my hometown, I knew something had to be done.
  • In 1517, a man named Johann Tetzel set up a pulpit on the outskirts of town, which really got me aggravated. He offered indulgences for any Christian who gave him money to rebuild a church in Rome. SO, I drew up the 95 thesis. These are mainly arguements against indulgances.
  • Almost overnight, the 95 thesis of mine were spread all around the area, causing arguments. Some people liked it, some people did not. The church did not like it at all, and they called on me to recant, but I resisted.
  • 95 Thesis
  • In 1521, I was excommunicated by the current pope. Later that same year, The new Roman Emperor, Charles V, summoned me to the diet. But all he did was simply tell me to give up, but I still resisted.
  • SO, out of his own anger, he considered me an outlaw. Anyone that was to give me food or shelter would immediately be put away for a long time. But, I still had my loyal supporters. In Germany, people learned about me, and considered me a hero for all of my amazing teachings.
  • hers My ideas kept on spreading like fires. While the new printing presses were helping copy my statements,  preaches denounced Church abuses. And by 1530, The Lutherans were using a new name, Protestant, for the people protesting the papal authority.
