The black box resembles death and fear. Its due to the fact that the box holds the lottery slips. And anybody unfortunate to have their named pulled with the black dot will be stoned to death. As stated on lines 311 to 312 "although the villagers had forgotten the ritual and lost the original black box,they still remembered to use stones."

Simile-in the story theres a simile that connects mr.summers to other programs other then the lottery. And how he orchestrates them. As stated on lines 38 to 39 "the lottery was conducted as were the square dances,the teenage club,the halloween program by mr summers."
tone-suspenseful-Everyone is on edge do to the lottery. This is because the person who gets the note with the black dot is deemed to die. And nobody wants to die. As stated on lines 294 to 296 "Mr. graves opened the slip of paper and there was general sigh throughout the crowd as he held it up and everyone could see it was blank."
