  • The text says "You are not a man yet. Do not be in such a hurry!" Salva hurried to the women's side. (Pg. 12) Salva thinks he is a man, and should go to the men's side, but the soldier says he should go to the women's side. Salva probably feels young and intimidated.
  • The text says "The tears were hot in Salva's eyes, where had they gone, why has they left him?" (Pg. 15) Salva is left in the barn because the other war travelers left him. He probably feels scared and abandoned.
  • The text says "I have talked to the others here, we believe that the village of Loun-Ariik was attacked and probably burned." "Your family...Salva, few people survived the attack on the village." (Pg. 59-60) Salva probably feels sad and hopeless on finding his family.
