English Shakespear marriage

Storyboard Text

  • Marriage wasn’t out of love, but it was a union, a sort of alliance between two families which enabled them to share land, resources and money.
  • Deal.
  • The legal minimum age to get married was 12 for girls and 14 for boys.
  • Marriages were arranged by the parents of the bride and groom.
  • Often the boy and girl were strangers before their marriage.
  • What's your name again?
  • You may kiss the bride.
  • If there was any sort of love at all, it came after the couple married, but mostly the husband and wife developed a sort of friendship.
  • Congratulations on your wedding! I'm sure you'll be a very happy couple...
  • What are you talking about? We're just friends.
  • But Mother, I want to marry Richard!
  • Money and reputation were often the main reasons for a marriage, rather than love.
  • We've already had this conversation, darling.
  • Not to mention our family's reputation...
  • John's family is much wealthier than Richard's, therefore their dowry will be more generous.
