Storyboard Text
Marriage wasn’t out of love, but it was a union, a sort of alliance between two families which enabled them to share land, resources and money.
Deal.
The legal minimum age to get married was 12 for girls and 14 for boys.
Marriages were arranged by the parents of the bride and groom.
Often the boy and girl were strangers before their marriage.
What's your name again?
You may kiss the bride.
If there was any sort of love at all, it came after the couple married, but mostly the husband and wife developed a sort of friendship.
Congratulations on your wedding! I'm sure you'll be a very happy couple...
What are you talking about? We're just friends.
But Mother, I want to marry Richard!
Money and reputation were often the main reasons for a marriage, rather than love.
We've already had this conversation, darling.
Not to mention our family's reputation...
John's family is much wealthier than Richard's, therefore their dowry will be more generous.
