In a small peaceful community called La Paz lived Kino's Family. It was a normal morning for Kino and his wife Juana and his son Coyotito. He sat in font of a fire that Juana prepared as he ate his corn bread and alcoholic drink, as he did every other morning.
Coyotito gets stung by a scorpion. He needs a doctor, but his family cannot afford one. Not only can they not get a doctor to help but the doctor is refusing to help because of their race and proceeds to call the animals.
Word of pearl had spread like wildfire through the neighbors and city folks. But the news wasn't the only thing that spread, greed enveloped the town. People would soon try to take advantage of Kino.
Kino was attacked on the beach and had to fight back in self-defense, he ended up ending the man's life. At this point Kino and Juana believed that the pearl was bad luck and there was no way to return to the normal life they had before.
Kino, Juana and Coyotito flee to the mountains of the north in search of a fresh, new start. But as they are leaving they realize they are being followed. they go into hiding. One of the hunters hears a baby's cry but mistakes it for a coyote and shoots it. Coyotito died that night leaving Kino and Juana heart broken and hopeless.
Kino and Juana return to La Paz with Coyotito in Juana's strap. Once they make it to the front of the ocean Kino takes the pearl and throws it back into the ocean.
