  • This is the time when the settlers disappeared from Roanoke. No one really knows what happened, but it is for sure that the settlers were gone. Governor John White left the colonists to get more supplies for the colony and returned two years later. He also told them to leave a distress symbol if anything were to happen to them. Once he arrived at Roanoke, all of the colonists were gone and their houses were taken apart neatly and stacked. He found the letter CROATOAN carved into a tree. The mystery still remains as to what happened to the colonists. Where they taken? Attacked? Or left?

  • In 1607, the English arrived in the "New World". On one of the three ships was Captain Newport, who was the first Governor. However, many got a disease on the ships and didn't make it to Jamestown. From there, they went straight to work and started to establish the colony. The settlers wanted to start a colony but was scared of what happened with Roanoke, they decided the "New World" would be a great place to establish a colony. The "New World" is know as Jamestown. John Smith helped to provide trading with the Indians.
  • 1612
  • This is a continued year of the Starving Time. Supplies was still very low if any and the colonists resorted to eating eachother, animals such as dogs, cats, and horses. What also made the Starving Time was that Chief Powhatan was angry with John Smith, which caused him to stop trading food and other resources with the colonists. Although, Pocahontas wanted peace with the colonists and the Indians. She later got married to John Rolfe.
  • 1619
  • This is the start of the Starving Period. John Rolfe was on a ship that had supplies and shipwrecked off the coast of Bermuda. This was bad but also good, he found tobacco which lead to a big fortune through England and the colony. The ship did not only have supplies on it that was lost but it also had 300 colonists on it. The colonists did make it to Jamestown but had a shortage of supplies.
  • The colonists also had a House of Representatives and the House of Burgesses. This allowed them to have laws and a well established, working colony. The House of Representatives consists of 7 white men who own a plantation and have a good reputation. When they meet together they have the House of Burgesses.
  • At this point in history, it was a turning point for the colonists. The colonists got the first boatload of women and African Americans, which means men could marry and start a family and that they could have slaves.
