Storyboard Text

  • Since more population means more representation in the house, we think slaves should be included in our states population count.
  • Since slaves are counted as property, they should not count as people because they are not free. Only free slaves should count in the population number.
  • Since slaves are people, they should be counted, but as three fifths of a person.
  • This is a way so that states with a higher population of slaves have more representation in the House of representatives.
  • Since some states had a low white population and a high slave population, like Virginia and Maryland, wanted slaves to count.
  • States that opposed slavery, like Massachusetts, said they should not count because they are not free people, but are property.
  • 2 men, Roger Sherman and James Wilson, presented a compromise of sorts to the delegates.
  • People who wanted a strong central government, and limited states power were called federalists. These people were from heavily populated areas, and were big farmers, artisans and merchants.
  • People who were opposed to having a strong central government and wanted all the power in the hands of the people were the antifederalists. They were normally small farmers from rural areas.
