At the church, Pony kind of finds out who he really is. He's not truly a greaser, he's a kid that likes reading and drawing and watching sunsets. He doesn't really like to fight, he thinks it's unnecessary. Pony wants to still be gold, and Johnny want's him to be gold too. "Stay gold, Ponyboy. Stay gold..."
Johhny has an influence on Ponyboy because he understands how Pony feels about fighting and sunsets and Socs. Johnny's Ponyboy's best friend, and when Johhny dies, that has a really big effect on Pony. Pony even goes as far as to convince himself that Johnny isn't dead. "He isn't dead, I said to myself. He isn't dead. And this time my dreaming worked. I convinced myself that he wasn't dead. "
Ponyboy and Darry butt heads all the time, causing a rift/uneasiness between them. Ponyboy feels like Darry doesn't really love him. When Pony''s in the hospital, he finally realizes that Darry really loves and cares about him, and the two of them become a lot closer as brothers. '"Darry!" I screamed, and the next thing I knew I had him around the waist and was squeezing the daylights out of him.'
