The Sad Princess of Santa Ana
Myth Assignment for Latino Culture
The kingdom was cursed for thousands of years. Every 100 years, the princess had the opportunity to save it but didn't. She knew the selfish ambition of men's hearts.
One day, a Spanish expeditionary met the princess, and she made him an offer.
I could be your wife, the most faithful and loving. Or I could give you a city of gold.
The expeditionary chose gold over the beautiful princess. So, the king cursed him.
You're coming with me!
In a panic, the expeditionary prayed to the Virgin of Santa Ana, and he was saved.
After he was saved, the hill was baptized with the name Santa Ana. This is said to have started the founding of Guayaquil.
