Storyboard Text

  • Everyone try to look like a rock and none of us will get eaten.
  • This big one was easiest to catch!
  • Looks like only us little guys are left.
  • Natural selection is the process by which a species of organisms may change over generations due to the passing on of traits, which are distinguishing characteristics, that are best suited to the species’ environment.
  • I know you are our brother, but what is up with the red fur?
  • Mine!
  • Traits that help an organism survive and reproduce get passed on because the organism lives long enough to have offspring. Traits that are harmful to an organism’s survival tend not to be passed on because the organism doesn’t survive to produce offspring.
  • Look how still I can stay! The owls will NEVER spot me.
  • Okay, Red, you stay over there and don't move.
  • Over generations, the organisms with the best traits for survival in their environment tend to live longest and have the most offspring, which they pass on their favorable traits to. This is how nature selects the best traits.
  • Hi! Want to move to a rose garden with me?
  • A new trait may randomly appear when there is a mutation in an organism’s genes in its DNA. In the natural selection process, mutations can help an organism avoid getting killed, or hurt an organism trying to survive.
  • If the mutation helps the organism survive, then the mutation that helped the organism survive can be passed down generation through generation. Mutations can, in other words, tip the scales of natural selection in your favor… or against you.
  • Mutations can also help create a new species by allowing a species to breed with another similar species due to geographic, physiological, anatomical, or behavioral changes. This is called speciation.
