- Hester and Toms child Wren wants to run away from anchorage in Vineland, and have adventures in different places. But when she tries to run way with the lost boys, Hester follows and kills 2 people who wren was running away with. wren is taken captive aboard a limpet because of her mothers actions. she is taken captive by a little lost boy named fishcake, who is scared because his parental figures have just been murdered in front of him. when they are together in the limpet a message comes through from the raft city Brighton. It is asking for all lost boys to come there because their parents are waiting for them. But it is all a set up. They are taken aboard Brighton , and made slaves to sell. Wren tries to tell them that she is not meant to be there but they only listen when she reveals she has an important artifact and information about the mayor of Brighton.
- "Drop the gun!" Fishcake shouted. "Or I'll ... I'll kill her, I'll kill her!"
- "Kill you?" Hester grabbed Wren by the collar of her jacket and pushed her hard against a tree. "I wish you'd never been born!" she shouted
- She is taken to the mayor, but when she gets there she lies and says the opposite of what got her out of the slave cells, to please the mayor. She is then sold as a slave to the mayors wife, and Wren does this all because she thinks she has a plan. Meanwhile her parents are looking for her. when Wren is serving at a party for her mistress, the party is invaded by the Green Storm, a league of people who want to end moving cities and raft cities. Cloud 9 (the airship that the party is on) is set a drift from the rest of Brighton. Wrens parents finally find her, but when they do, Wren reveals the truth about what happened between her parents after he mayor of Brighton tells her about it. This tears Tom and Hester apart because of what Hester did, and hester thinks that everyone is against her. she draws a knife on wren in response, then leaves for good.
