Frederick douglass was born around the early 1800s. Douglass was born on a plantation in Maryland,he was a slave from that day on. He never knew who his father was and his mother only visited him at night, because he was be separated from his mother when he was at a age where he could do his own work. He worked in fields his whole life and had never been to a city like Baltimore or even a house like the Auld’s home. He was sent from place to place and now, Frederick was sent to the Aulds to work for them. The Aulds never owned a slave before and they need Douglass to look after their little boy.
He starts to work for the Aulds, while he was working for them Mrs Auld starts to teach Douglass to read, give him a nice room, and gives him good food. Mrs Auld was really nice and warm at first. Since she had never owned a slave before, she treated him like a human. Douglass started to feel comfortable at the Aulds house and it is much better than a plantation.
“ What do you think your doing,” Mr.Auld was yelling at Mrs.Auld “ Don't you know what will happen to the boy if he learns to read!” “ I Don't, what will happen.” Mrs.Auld sounded scared. “ He will become unhappy and unfit for work” “you must stop teaching him it is against the law anyway. You must start treating him as if he is a slave not your child.” “ yes Husband.” Frederick hears everything Mr.Auld and thinks to himself why he would say such things and why he should be treated like this?
