The narrator is sleeping in his chair with a book on his lap. He wake up to a knock at his chamber door, but when he opens the door no one is there, then he hears a tap at his window, so he checks that, and a raven flies into the chamber.
The raven perches on a bust of Pallas above the chamber door and the narrator moves his chair up to the door, intrigued by the raven, so he starts asking it questions, but the raven only replies, "Nevermore" with every question. The narrator starts getting mad at the raven because it only answers his questions with, "Nevermore".
The narrator realizes that he will be sad forever and that the crow will never leave the chamber. The narrator will never figure out what happened to Lenore after her death.
