My step dad immigrated from France. His school (Universite de Lyon) had an exchange program with Oregon during his fourth year. This was a pull factor.
In his opinion, America had more available jobs for the career he wished to pursue. (computer scientist) this was a push factor.
Traveling was a great experience, he was very hopeful for new adventures. He wasn't too worried because he spoke fluent English.
After graduating, he became a computer scientist. He thought it was great! There was higher pay and friendly colleagues.
Until marrying, he lived in small apartments. He did not care much about appearance so he often bought the cheapest items. So living conditions were decent.
Overall, he loves America and is very glad he immigrated. But it wasn't always easy, my dad struggled with immigration paperwork because it was very strict and he had certain restrictions and time periods that were a bit unfair.
