  • Europe: 1500s
  • 95 Theses By Martin Luther
  • I have nailed my 95 theses to this door in protest of the corruption that has infected the Catholic Church.  The leaders have become too wealthy, the priests have disgraced their calling, none of the lay understand the Bible, and Indulgences are unholy.
  • This newly invented printing press is a great way to spread the truth.
  • Such conveniency!
  •  Martin Luther had struck a blow against the Catholic Church. The Protestant Reformation left the Church Jesus had founded more divided than ever.
  • I am a powerful ruler, and I agree!
  • Do not listen to the Pope! We don't need to do good works to get into Heaven. God fills us with grace to do good works. It doesn't come from us. There is no Purgatory! All you need is the Bible, and Christ is the sole content of it.
  • Martin Luther's teaching isn't correct. The Catholic Church may have corrupted, but we still believe in the truth. The authority of the church is passed down from scripture and tradition. Modeled after Peter, the Pope is the leader of the church. Christ is truly present in the Eucharist. There are seven sacraments, not just two. All people have free will. We can not only use scripture shape our lives around, and to get to Heaven, one must both have faith and perform holy works of mercy.
  • Welcome to the Council of Trent. We have some very pressing matters to address.
  • We are here to clearly define Catholic teaching, call out corrupt priests, and more strictly regulate the training of priests.
  • However, the church also destroyed much of their corruption, more defined its teachings, and restored its legitimacy.
