Storyboard Text

  • Introduction
  • Humans. A great diversity, but we are all the same. Although we have different beliefs, and different skin colors or types, why does that make it okay to discriminate against someone? We all bleed the same color, right?  In the book thief, Jews were discriminated against and had to wear a special symbol in public. Why should it be okay to label a person for what they believe in?
  • Narration
  • Discrimination was a big problem in the time that "The Book Thief" was set and it still is now. Fortunately there is less discrimination these days and there are laws set to help these issues, however it does not stop them completely and still is an issue. In "The book thief" Hans and Liesel had to hide max in the basement because he was one of the people being discriminated against. If they were caught they would have been severly punished (sent away). This was an issue because of Max's religion he had to hide and nearly starve in a basement. Is that just?
  • Discrimination means treating people differently based on generalizations about their groups. (Research in Context, Gale, 2018.)
  • Conformation-Novel
  • Because of discrimination, Hans and his family hid Max in the basement because they knew he wasn't supposed to be there. After the war, there was still discrimination because people would believe that it was the Jews fault that we had these issues.
  • In sloppy lettering, the words JEWISH FILTH were spilling over at their edges. (C.29)
  • Conformation-research
  • Discrimination usually involves a majority group targeting a minority group. ("Discrimination." Research in Context, Gale, 2018.)
  • Concession/refutation
  •  Jews are blamed for the plague epidemic in Europe and accused of poisoning the wells. ("Poles" Research in context, Gale)
  • However, just because they were blamed to have done something does not mean you should completley turn your backs. Every race or culture has made some kind of mistake but that does not mean they are not all equal.
  • Conclusion
  • Furthermore, discrimination is a social issue that will most likely never go away. Discrimination comes in all types of forms and stopping it means changing peoples entire minds.  Sadly, discrimination is one of those big issues and it does not make the world fair. What can you do about it? It is almost like it is in people DNA to discriminate.
  • This information above states that discrimination usually happens when a 'majority group targets a minorty group'In the book thief, Hitler was 'targeting the Jews and therefor treating them unfairly causing discrimination towards them.
  • Moreover, americans have made mistakes too but because we are a 'Majority' group (RIC Gale) We are not targeted this harshly by other cultures. Because of a disagreement or  a belief that a culture did something wrong, does not mean to in a way, torture them. In the book thief, words can fix that. And in our world, it can too, simply solving an issue by an agreement is a much better option.
  • Hopefully one day in the near future people will learn that discrimination is really a horrible thing, and slowly over time it will dissapear.
