The cobra is crawling over Mrs. Whynnes and she stays calm. This contradicts the young women and the colonel's argument because she is a woman but she is calm and courageous. Instead of freaking out, she asks her servant to put a bowl of milk out.
This is dramatic irony because the audience and only a few of the characters know that the cobra is under the table. The American makes a game to keep everybody calm just in case the cobra strikes
At the end, the argument is solved because the hostess showed that women can have control and they can handle the situation as well as possible. After the cobra comes out for the milk, they shut the vendura The theme of this story is that the gender of someone doesn't effect the courageousness and ability to handle situations.
