When Siddhartha grows up he lived in a life of luxury. His father also protected him from anything unpleasant. Siddhartha married young and had a son.
I was good in my past life. That must be why I was given such luxury as a young man.
Once he went out of his castle alone and saw four passing sight. First, he saw an old man leaning on a cane. Next, he saw a man shrunken with disease. Also, he saw a man dead surrounded by family. Finally, he saw a holy man, who was content despite having nothing.

The path to salvation, you must first..
Siddhartha joined a group of ascetics, and tried the path of self-denial for five years. Eventually, he ate only, one jujube fruit and one grain of rice .After five years, he passed out from lack of food, and woke up to a milkmaid offering him food, he accepted and realized, the path of self-denial is not the way to salvation.
Siddhartha renewed his search for the path to salvation. Siddhartha sat and prayed under a fig tree for forty-nine days. During this time, he saw his past lives, and fully understood the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth, and achieved enlightenment.
The Buddha was liberated from the cycle of rebirth, but instead of enjoying Nirvana he went back down to awaken the world of how to get enlightenment. He traveled across India for forty-five years, trying to help people understand how to escape the cycle of rebirth.
