Henry Ossian Flipper was born a slave on March 21, 1856. He was the eldest of five children.
In 1863 Henry and his family were freed by enactment of the Emancipation Proclamation.
When Henry was a freshman at Atlanta University, he was appointed to the United States Military Academy and graduated 15th in a class of 72.
As and officer of the tenth Calvary, Henry served at many forts including fort Elliot and fort Quitman. He only first saw Texas as he was on his way to Fort Sill.
Though his military career was taken away, he is the first African American civil and mining engineer.
On april 26, 1940 Henry Ossian Flipper dies of natural causes. The first African American to lead in the military and the first Africa American to be an engineer.
