Della finds herself alone, crying on her knees, wishing she had more money to buy Jim a better gift.
The Perfect Gift
Della gets an idea, she looks at a shop that advertises they do business with hair of all kinds.
Della gets $20 for her perfect brown locks and goes off on a search for the perfect gift.
Luck and the Magi
Della finds a perfect golden watch with a chain, spends $20 for it and quickly hurries home.
Della curls her hair to look more presentable for Jim, and awaits him coming home. When Jim walked in, he was unsmiling, staring at her with a blank expression. He repeatedly asks if Della cut her hair and if it's gone which in turn makes Della nervously explain.
I'm sorry, Jim, I had to!!
Jim comforts Della, reassuring her he wouldn't leave her for something as minor as a haircut. He shows her his gift to him, gorgeous hair comb, coated in jewels and precious metals. Della proudly shows Jim the golden chain for his watch, but instead of taking it kindly, he tells her he sold his watch for her combs, and offers to have a nice evening with her, to which she gladly agrees. The End.
