When Mariam goes to visit Jalil's house wanting to see her brothers and sisters, she is shut out and made to sleep on the street. Jalil, though home, was made to believe out of the house and had her daughter stay outside in the cold.
After the disappointment of not being able to see her father, brothers and sisters, she comes home to the horrible sight of her mother, who had killed herself while Mariam was out. Leaving her all alone no one who truly cares for her.
After an arrange marriage that seemed to be fine, Mariam had many miscarriages. Each miscarriage made Rasheed more angry. With the increasing temper of Rasheed, their relationship turned abusive. Rasheed making Mariam do things like eating pebbles when he didn't like the food.
Then he was gone, leaving Mariam to spit out pebbles, blood, and the fragments of two broken molars.
