You're going to love these new swim trunks! To think they were 40% off! What a great sale!
We love a good sale! But, Mom, how did you know how much you were going to pay?
Quinn's mom bought him a pair of swimming trunks for 40% off the original price. If the original price was $35.00, how much did she pay?A. $14.00B. $21.00 C. $33.60D. $36.40
Step 1: Read the question and Assign question type! Since it's talking about discounts and sales, I'm going to say it's a Ratio and Proportions problem!

Quinn's mom bought a pair of swimming trunks for 40% off the original price. If the original price was $35.00, how much did she pay?A. $14.00B. $21.00 C. $33.60D. $36.40
Looks like RP to me! Now I have to Identify key words! It looks like 40% off, original price, and $35.00 are my key words!

Quinn and his mother go shopping for swim trunks at the mall and encounter a wonderful sale!
Quinn's mom bought a pair of swimming trunks for 40% off the original price. If the original price was $35.00, how much did she pay?A. $14.00B. $21.00 C. $33.60D. $36.40
$ %X 4035.00 100
Since it's RP I'll have to use MATH to Show my strategy! So I'll start by Making my table and Assigning my given numbers.

Now I can go ahead and Test a pattern. Since I have my table I can go ahead and cross multiply! Time to Help find the unknown numbers!

But I know that 40% is the DISCOUNT, so I know that I have to subtract that from the original price. When I do that, I get answer choice C: 21.00. which makes sense because 40% is close to 50% which means it should be a little less than half off the original price.
$ %X 4035.00 100
100x = 35 * 40100x = 1400100 100x = 14.00

Lucky me! I remembered that the trunks were 40% OFF which means that I need to subtract it from the original price! But that pesky first answer choice would definitely have gotten me if I hadn't looked back at the question and wording! So DISTRACTING!
