  • "Bang! Crash! Waaaaa!" The Nazis have invaded the Landau's house in the middle of the night. Everyone is thrown onto the hard-living room floor. Nazis grab Josef's father and they drag him towards the door. "Aaron Landau has continued to practice law after it has been forbidden, he will be taken into custody." Josef grabbed a Nazi arm to fight for his dad but he gets thrust off. The family watches as their father gets dragged out of the house disappearing in the distance. The rest of the family held each other close and cried all night long.
  • Josef's father is released from the Dachau concentration camp after six months and is told to be out of Germany in two weeks along with his family. Josef, Ruthie, and Mama get onto a train that will take them to a boat (Saint Louis). This boat will take them to Cuba, to safety. Jews on this train have to wear the Star of David so people know they are jews, you never want to be caught without it. Josef father is meeting them at the Saint Louis to sail to Cuba.
  • "Alrighty, I believe this is where I am supposed to bring yall. Thank you for choosing Trevor's train travel. We hope you were satisfied with your service on the train and hope to see you again soon." Everyone got off the train and Josef's mother weaved them through the crowd where the boat waited for them along with Josefs father
  • The boat was much nicer than Josef expected. He expected it to be nasty and bad quality considering all of Germany hates them. Nazis greeted them on the way into the ship. Josefs father pulled them all into a hug and smiled. "Ruthie, Josef, my dearest wife! I've missed you so much, now we must get on the boat quickly before the Nazis change their mind. Run, sprint, do anything just don't get caught." The family stood with confused expressions. Josef, Ruthie, and his mother all realize quickly that their father has changed a lot in the past six months after the camp. They realized he is always jittery and looks frightened constantly. He is acting like a child.
