  • Karl returns to the Berlin Boxing Club, and finds out that it has been sold and turned into a cloth factory.
  • Karl, So g-g-g-good to see you!
  • Joe Louis is winning, it's the first round and Max is got knocked off his feet, for the 3rd time. He is down... 1   2   3   4   5   6   7   8   9   10!  He is  out. You heard it Max Schmeling is beaten within the first 2 minutes of the first round.
  • Max Schmeling and Joe Louis are having a rematch. Joe Louis won!
  • Joe Louis winning the rematch between him and Max Schmeling resulted in deadly cascading events in Germany.
  • One night of November 1938, Nazis mobs attacked Jews, destroying homes. They beat or killed Jews.  
  • The gallery where Karl’s family is living, was invaded on the Night of Broken Glass, also known as Kristallnacht. Karl and his dad fought the intruders off. Resulting in his father getting stabbed, Karl’s mom and dad are going to the hospital.
  • They'll be safer here. Karl's a man, he can take care of things.
  • Hildy don't be scared. Karl is the toughest guy on the block now.
  • After Karl's parents went to the hospital, he called the countess. The countess took care of Karl and Hildy for a couple of days, until most fighting had died down. Then Karl went to the hotel Excelsior, to confront Max Schmeling on his situation.
  • Last night our home was attacked, intruders broke into our gallery, where we were living, they looted and destroyed everything. Our father was stabbed trying to defend us, he may not be getting treatment he needs. My mother could be anywhere right now. Me and Hildy are hiding with a friend of my fathers. We have no family to turns to.

  • Many Jews escaped to surrounding countries to be relieved from the killing around them.
  • Good-bye Germany, be safe mother. 
  • With all their mixed emotions for Germany, they departed. Going to America to live a safe life away from all the fighting, in America they believe in democracy, diversity, and freedom. Karl and Hildy will live with their aunts and uncles, but live separately.
  • Jews that lived in Germany during the Holocaust, had to change their whole life style in order to protect themselves to the dangers around them. 
  • Karl has developed mentally throughout the novel. Karl's has not only matured but learned who he is. Karl has learned to defend himself and others, fight with pride and not raw violence. He has learned to deal with bully's big or small, old or young. He has learned how to deal with separation from his family and friends. As well as, learning to keep calm in dire situations, this results in him being an excellent role model for others. He has been able to find a solutions to problems that took bravery even when all hope seemed lost. Even if he is under pressure, he figures out what he can do, in order to help the situation that he is in. He not only fixes his situation, but will try to fix his families situations as well.
