  • Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer for Spain Landed in the Americas in 1492  . He was looking for a faster and safer route to Asia. He landed on San Salvodor.
  • Pineda was the first European to map the the Texas coast and the gulf of Mexico in 1519. He did not finish his mission. Some of his men were arrested by Cortes who saw them as a threat .
  • When Cortes and his men arrived in 1519 the Aztecs viewed hem as gods because of their large horses, armor, and their firearms. With the help of Aztec enemies they were able to take over the Aztecs and used the mainland as a base of operation.The Aztecs possessed gold and silver that was sent back to Spain.
  • In 1528 Cabeza de Vaca and many other men shipwrecked on Galveston Bay and the Karankawas gave them food and  lived as medic men. They finaly went back to Mexico. They told stories about Cibola the lost city of gold. Only 7 men survived out of 100.
  • In 1540 Coronado and more than 1000 men went in search for Cibola. They found the Grand Canyon, the Pacific Ocean, and explored present day Kansas. since there was no gold in Texas , the Spanish ignored  it for over a 100yrs until another country took interest in the area in 1684.
  • Robert La Salle set established Fort St.Louis by the mississippi river but ran out of supplies in 1643. La Salle decided to travel to mexico to get supplies,but when he was gone indians attacked the fort. By 1686 only 45 out of 400 people were still alive. In 1687 he and the survivors left for french canada, but along the way La salle was killed by his own men. Only 7 men survived out of 400 men
