  • Oedipus explains to Jocasta, "A man at the banquet table, who had had too much to drink, told me, over his wine, that I was not the true son of my father" (Sophocles 45).
  • Who are my birth parents then?
  • Why has this been hidden from me for so many years?
  • Apollo explained to Oedipus, "To lie with my mother and beget children men's eyes would not bear the sight of" (Sophocles 45).
  • You are going to kill your father and marry you mother.
  • Oedipus announces, "I was running to a place where I would never see that shameful prophecy come true" (Sophocles 45).
  • I need to leave before the prophecy comes true!
  • Oedipus explains, "As I journeyed on I came near to this triple crossroad and there I was met by a herald and a man riding on a horse-drawn wagon" (Sophocles 45).
  • Move out of my way!
  • Do NOT tell ME what to do!
  • *Repeats* Move out of my way!
  • Oedipus says, "The driver, and the old man himself, tried to push me off the road" (Sophocles 45).
  • Take another step closer and you will not live to see another day.
  • *takes last breath*
  • Oedipus speaks viciously, "In anger I struck the driver as he tried to crowd me off" (Sophocles 45).
  • That will show him.
