- A letter to King William 4 by 13 maori chiefs from the Bay of Islands in 1831. The Maori chiefs main aim were to get the kings protection against the french. other concerns they had were inter-tribal conflict, the miscounduct of british subjects and they wanted the kind to defend them against lawless.
- 1835, He whakaputanga Declared
- Following on from the letter, James Busby was appointed a british resident in New Zealand. He arrived in 1833, but he had no army or police force to support him. He had to use a discussion and agreements to achieve anything.

- In march 1836, at waitangi, northern chiefs selected a flag desgin,which became known has the as the Untited tribes flag.
- 1844, the Treaty of Waitangi was signed
- The maori were concered about lawless in Kororareka, and France's intrest in claiming NZ. So northern rangatira were brought together by busby, and the Whakaputanga was declared.
