In book one of the chosen the exposition takes place on a baseball field while the Hasidic and Orthodox Jews are playing a friendly game. The game turns into a war that leads to Reuven getting hit in the face by Danny.
Reuven's coach, Mr. Galanter, takes Reuven to the hospital. While at the hospital Reuven has a flashback of when he was healthy and at home. His dad, David Malter, says that you don't know how fortunate you are until you become unfortunate.
Danny feels guilty of hurting Reuven and decides to visit him at the hospital. The rising action is that Danny and Reuven create an unlikely friendship. The irony is displayed when Danny confesses to Reuven that he doesn't want to become a Rabbi and instead wants to study psychology, Reuven, on the other hand, wants to become a Rabbi but his father wants to him to be a mathematician.
