  • Junior struggles to deal with his living situation and his place in society. He feels unwelcome and finds it difficult for him and other people of his background to achieve their dreams and be accepted by their peers.
  • Junior is forced to face his best friend Rowdy in a high school basketball game that is extremely important to both schools. What makes it worse is Junior and Rowdy had a bad falling out so there is negative tension between the two already.
  • Junior is forced to face many hateful and negative things from society even on the reservation because of his appearance and mannerisms; but when he transfers schools to Reardan, the wealthy white school, he begins being targeted for his race as well.
