  • This momentous decree is a great beacon light of hope to millions of Negro slaves who had been seared in the flames o[ withering injustice.
  • Pathos
  • When the architects of our Republie wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, they were signing· a promissary note to which every American had to fall heir. 
  • Logos
  • But 100 years later the Negro still is not free. One hundred years later the life of the Negro is still badly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination. 
  • Explains that black ancestors were beaten and they new generation is still being discriminated and were being treated unfairly.
  • Ethos
  • Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred.
  • Martin is referncing to the declaration of independence and how we are not following this famous paper that we wrote.
  • Pathos
  • Now is the time to make real the promises of democracy.
  • Martin is saying that black people are still getting treated the same as they were 100 years ago and it continues to be unjust.
  • Logos
  • Martin is explaining that black people already have a bad reputation no matter what they do or how they act.
  • Martin is referencing to the democracy that America has and how we are not doing it.
  • He is saying that the year of 1963 will be the year for black people and equal rights.
  • This sweltering summer of the negro's legitimate discontent will not pass until there is an invigorating autumn of freedom and equality -1963 is not an end but a beginning.
