Storyboard Text

  • Grandaughter, I believe you are ready for your vision quest.
  • I shall stay here! Look at how beautiful and relaxing this waterfall is! This will be perfect while praying.
  • Khona is a 16-year-old girl that is ready to embark on her journey to adulthood. Khona speaks to an elder, who happens to be her grandfather. The elder explains that Khona must go on a vision quest to undergo an intense solitary spiritual experience, purification and receive direction from the spirit.
  • Khona leaves her reserve and sets out to find a sacred location in which she is able to connect to the environment and spirits. She follows the sound of water as she walks through the green forest. Khona reaches her sacred location that provides peace and harmony.
  • Hi everyone I missed you all! My journey was amazing and very peaceful. I had a vision!
  • Khona begins to fast and pray as she purifies her mind, body and spirit. At this time, she prays at the base of a hollow tree that echos the sounds of the running water and chirping birds. Her connection with this land, the Creator and spirits will help her to see her vision. Eventually, Khona falls asleep.
  • I believe that you will become very wise and intellectual. You will follow the footsteps of your grandmother and I, as you have the knowledge and wisdom that will allow you to eventually become an elder in the community.
  • After the fasting, praying and purification, Khona has a vision. She sees a beautiful brown owl with large wings and golden eyes fly towards her. The owl sits on a branch and nods at Khona. The owl soars into the sky and Khona knows that this encounter was sacred.
  • It is now time for Khona to head back to her family and community. As she walks back, she thinks about how much she misses her family and wonders what the vision of the owl meant. Khona finally sees her mom, dad, brother and grandmother, who is also a communal elder.
  • Khona speaks to her grandfather about her vision of the owl. Her grandfather explains to her that the sacred owl symbolizes wisdom, knowledge and intuition. This is very significant as this explains her role in the community and purpose in life.
