  • Meeting of Estates-General
  • The Third Estate demands equality!
  • But that means WE have to pay
  • The Tennis Court Oath
  • We will never separate and meet whenever the circumstances might require.
  • Storming of the Bastille
  • WE SURRENDER!
  • When the Estates-General met in 1789, their main focus was solving the financial crisis that was facing France. But, when the Third Estate grew tired of stalemate, they decided to declare themselves the National Assembly.
  • March on Versailles
  • After being locked out of their meeting hall, the National Assembly went to a nearby tennis court to finish their meeting. There they swore to meet until they could create a sound constitution that would serve the people.
  • Reign of Terror
  • Should have thought before you went against the Republic!
  • On July 14, 1789, around 800 Parisians gathered around the Bastille, a prison believed to hold weapons. They demanded the weaponry and gunpowder, but instead, they were met with gunfire are brute force. After this bloody battle, most Parisians clearly saw the abuse from the monarchy.
  • Rise of Napoleon
  • I will enforce Enlightenment priciples into our new code of laws!
  • On October 5th, about 6,000 angry women marched from Paris to Versailles. Upon their arrival, they demanded to see the King. They refused to leave until the King agreed to return to Paris with them. Eventually, they succeeded and kept the royal family in Paris for the next 3 years.
  • You are coming with us to Paris!
  • The Reign of Terror lasted from September 1793 to July 171794. During this time, Revolutionary courts held trials that acted impulsively and often exercised the death sentence. The guillotine was the most common way to execute. Executions were done out in the open, and drew in a great deal of spectators.

  • Napoleon Bonaparte was a popular war hero who won many battles against Austria in Italy. After politicians tried to use him to achieve their goals, Napoleon outsmarted them earned himself the title of ruler of France. During his reign, he reformed much of France and incorporated Enlightenment ideals into French government.
