The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street Theme: Suspicious and fearful thoughts can cause people to think of others as less than human.
all we need do is sit back...and watch
When Charlie was accused of being the monster people began to throw rocks at his house that broke through glass and cut his face.
In the teleplay story "The Monsters are Due on Maple Street" a peaceful neighborhood goes into chaos because of people going to extreme lengths to find a scapegoat. That means the theme is "suspicious and fearful thoughts can cause people to think of others as less than human". Also my examples 1, 2, and 3 go perfectly with the theme. Why scene one supports my theme is because Charlie being accused of the monster caused everyone to freak out and attack him. Scene two supports my theme because they didn’t realize that Pete Van Horn was the figure and shot him because of suspicions of being a monster. So with the final scene I chosen that showed chaos upon Maple Street shows that nobody was human to anybody at that point. All of these scenes I feel supported my theme because in them people treat one another as less than human which is terrible no matter the circumstances. My theme was stated clearly in the story and it can even apply to the real world. In most people bias can make people have suspicions thoughts about another person without even looking inside the other person. An example would be racism, when some people look at others they think just cause they’re black, Latino, or Asian they can treat them as if they were less than human. This can apply to Maple Street except racism is not active only thoughts and suspicions about what the others do. Actually in the teleplay Steve a character who had a lot of lines was accused of being the monster for having a radio. Not only that but 14 year old Tommy was accused because he was the one who said there was a monster in the first except there was no real monster. Really it is idiotic for people in a peaceful neighborhood to fall out of wack due to a power outage caused by aliens. Not only that but by making one person’s lights go on and of triggered everyone else to go crazy. In doing this people lose their common sense of trying to find some type of clue towards getting close the real aliens. In conclusion the theme "suspicious and fearful thoughts can cause people to think of others as less than human", goes well with the examples and even relates to the real world.
When the people of Maple Street saw a shadow that was Pete Van Horn Charlie shot and killed him because of his fearful thoughts.
At the end of the story and film the whole neighborhood had fallen into chaos because of their suspicions and fear.
