  • One major theme of " The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" is that  human beings can be their own worst enemy. One piece of evidence that supports this theme is when it had all started with Les Goodman's car " We're all on a monster kick Les, seems that one family isn't what we think they are". This quote supports my theme because his car had started all by it's self while he wasn't in it. Just because of that they all suddenly think there is a monster among all of them even though they have known each other their whole lives. My second piece of evidence that supports my theme is when Charlie got so caught up he did the unthinkable. " Charlie slowly raises the gun and as the figure gets closer and closer, he pulls the trigger and ends up shooting and killing Pete Van Horn". This quote supports my theme because since the whole town was convinced their was a monster among them, Charlie decided to do something about it. Unfortunately,  when Charlie shot Pete Van Horn, His actions had made the whole town start  to throw rocks at his house and a piece of glass hit Charlie in the head and cut his forehead. Lastly the aliens end up saying in the end of act 2 " They pick the most dangerous enemy they can find and it's themselves. This scene supports my theme because all the figures did was leave them in darkness for a few hours and turned off  a few of the machines. Suddenly the whole town jumps to conclusions, and blames all of the closest people they have known forever. In conclusion, after only a few hours of darkness it is complete chaos and all of the residents on Maple Street are each others worst enemy.
