We learn that Ally can't read when she accidentally gives her teacher a sympathy card at her baby shower. Mrs. Hall is very upset because she thinks Ally did it on purpose and sends her to the Principal's office. Ally spends a lot of time here because she avoids doing her work, not because she doesn't want to , but because she doesn't know how to complete it.
Ally's class gets a new substitute teacher, Mr. Daniel, who helps her learn to read. She also makes some new friends, Albert and Keisha, that help Ally feel better about her self. Although Ally excels at being creative, she continues to struggle in an academic setting.
