Rodrick Usher, a childhood friend of the narrator tells him that need to visit him for a short time so that he help him overcome some kind of sickness. The narrator notices that the house is broken down.
Rodrick appears to be just as broken as his house with a sickly and pale appearance. He tells the narrator that he has a mental illness that makes all of his senses sensitive he also tells the narrator that he is staying with his sister Madeline, the last usher other than himself.
Rodrick then reveals that his sister is dying. She then dies and is placed in a coffin inside a vault inside one of the walls of the house. The narrator notices that Madeline's cheeks are still flushed. Rodrick's demeanor gets worse after shed dies.
After Madeline's death the narrator starts hearing weird noises in the house. One night in the middle of a storm Rodrick bursts in the room in fright and the narrator tries to calm him down by reading a book. While he reads the book they hear weird noises that sound like they are coming directly from the book.
A disturbed Rodrick then revealed that the noises that they've been hearing was actually Madeline trying to escape her tomb. He fears that they may have buried her alive. Right after that the door flies open and Madeline comes and attacks Rodrick and they both fall and die with Rodrick death probably being from shock while the narrator escapes.
As the narrator watches the house crumbles to the ground.
