lHis whole life, Charlie wanted to be smart, but he had a problem, He physically couldn't. (He had low intelligence)
I want to be smart. (p. 1)
This is Charlie. a 38 year old man.
But one day (through the recommendation of Mrs Kinnean, who is Charlie's teacher) a few doctors (after some arguments and tests [which didn't go well]) decided that they would use charlie in a surgery to increase his intellect.
All right maybe your right. We will use charlie. (p. 3)
Their going to use me! Im so exited I can hardly write. (p. 2)
It's now after the operation and things are now going back to normal for Charlie. Except he's getting frustrated and is starting to think everything is stupid because he thinks he's not getting any smarter. (he actually is, his spelling and grammar are slowly getting better.) Also, oddly enough it seems that part of Charlie's motivation is a mouse named Algernon which is one of the factors driving him to get smarter.
I hate that mouse. Thse inkblots are stupid. And those pictures are stupid too. I think writing these progress reports are stupid too. (p. 4)
Although Charlie is getting smart in school-related areas, he is also being more aware of his environment. What I mean by this is when he was at the party being laughed at, he finally realized that his "friends" aren't really his friends. (he's now feeling depressed)
It's a funny thing I never knew that Joe and Frank and the others like to have me around all the time to make fun of me. (p. 9)
Now to make things even worse for Charlie, people seem to be afraid of him now because of his intellect. For example, he got fired at work because people were afraid of him and didn't want to be near him.
It would be better for everybody if you left Charlie (Pg. 12)
They've driven me out of the factory. Now i'm more alone than ever before... (pg. 13)
And now is the moment that Charlie completely realizes what his former self-was like and in a way is showing pity for what he once was. It is this incident that pushes Charlie to become a researcher in the field of psycology. (he is remembering one of the reasons of why he did the operation in the first place, to help others.
Shut up! Leave him alone! It's not his fault he can't understand! He can't help what he is! (pg. 15)
Ha Ha Ha!!!
Get the broom and sweep that mess up. A broom...a broom, you idiot! (pg. 15)
