Frederick seized Covey by the collar, both of them looking surprised for different reasons. Frederick was confused that he had the audacity to attack his master, but after taking the first step he was ready to fight. Covey on the other hand couldn’t believe that he had attacked him. The stunned reaction from Covey only fueled Fredrick’s addrenilen. Covey wasn’t going to go down easy. He started punching as if he was having a tantrum, but it didn’t affect Frederick. Covey wasn’t trying to get away, he just wanted the grip on his neck a little looser. This would allow him yell “Help me this beast of a man is attacking me”.
Not to long after he called for help. It was a 2v1 with the other overseer Mr. Hughes and Covey vs Frederick. Frederick charged the men and kicked Hughes right in the gut, making him fall to the ground in pain. This victory fueled Frederick’s strength and Covey felt his fear take over.
Frederick was the first to draw blood from Covey. He landed a series of well aimed and strong punches to the face. Covey became reckless and tried to grab a weapon to gain an advantage in this hand to hand fight. Frederick yelled “you cheater this a fight between men”.Covey responded “there are no rules in a fight” . Frederick tackled Covey before he could reach the weapon. Covey fell to the ground, Frederick jumped on him, and forced him to admit defeat. After this event Covey no longer whipped Frederick. His spirit was now revived and knew he was a slave under the law, but not in his heart.
