  • "Don't talk rot, Whitney. Superstitions aren't real," laughed Rainsford in reply.
  • "Off there to the right is Ship-Trap Island," cautiously warned Whitney.
  • "Don't be alarmed," pleaded Rainsford, with a smile which he hoped was disarming.
  • "Now you want clothes, food, rest. You shall have them. This is a most restful spot," Zaroff suavely told Rainsford.
  • "I must keep my nerve. I have played the fox, now I must play the cat of the fable," Rainsford thought calmly.
  • "What are the attribute's of an ideal quarry? It must have courage, cunning, and, above all, it must be able to reason," Zaroff amuzingly told Rainsford
  • "My quarry has escaped me; of course the American hadn't played the game," Zaroff thought sorely.
  • "Nerve, nerve, nerve!" Rainsford yelled to himself.
  • "One of us is to furnish a repast for the hounds. The other will sleep in this very excellent bed. On guard, Rainsford," Zaroff confidently replied.
  • "I'm still a beast at bay. Get ready General Zaroff," Rainsford hatefully said.
  • "I have never slept in a better bed," Rainsford thought happily.
