Storyboard Text

  • La Mulata de Córdoba was a free African-Mexican (unlike many African-Mexicans at the time) who lived in the mountains of Veracruz.
  • La Mulata de Córdoba"the free witch"
  • La Mulata de Córdoba had a lot of knowledge in medicine and medicinal plants. Her skills helped the people in her area, where there were very few doctors.
  • She also was a midwife, which was much appreciated by the women in Veracruz because going through labor at home was very challenging.
  • La Mulata de Córdoba was sent to prison due to "witchcraft" that she was accused of by Spanish officials. She was only 17. However, she escaped and fled.
  • La Mulata de Córdoba's vanishing was an embarrassment to Mexican officials, so her disappearance was said to be related to witchery. Mulata was never seen again.
  • Mulata de Córdoba was very important to history because of the many lives she saved with either her medicinal knowledge, or by helping safely deliver a baby, when there wasn't anyone else to fulfill either roles. Malata wasn't just a 17 year old doctor and midwife, she was a healer.
