Storyboard Text

  • Hi my name is Sayyid. Today I will describe how Earth’s rotation causes the day/night cycle and the apparent movement of the Sun across the sky.
  • So lets understand what causes day and night.
  • Each planet rotates, or spins, on its axis. The rotation of the Earth on its axis causes day and night. As the Earth rotates, only one-half of the Earth faces the sun at any given time. The half facing the sun is light (day) and the half facing away from the sun is dark (night).

  • Night
  • From Earth, the Sun looks like it moves across the sky in the daytime and appears to disappear at night. This is because the Earth is spinning towards the east about its axis. After one full Earth rotation you wouldn't quite be facing the sun—it will have shifted a little bit in the sky.
