After a problem they faced, Janie and Jody stop talking to each other and start becoming distant. When Jody starts getting sicker by the day, rumors start spreading about Janie supposedly poisoning Jody for revenge.
When Janie brought a doctor to check up on Jody, it quickly turned into an argument when she talked to him. Janie eventually tells Jody he's going to die, and he begs her to stop. Just like Janie said, Jody ended up dying and she moves on, in search of her dreams.
After Jody's death, Janie feels relieved and finally free, but still needed to display sadness because of the other's passing. She started hating Nanny on thee inside because of how she raised her. It didn't encourage her to follow her dreams.
After Jody's death, Janie isn't sure what to do next. She gets help from Hezekiah Potts, the 17-year-old delivery boy who worked for Starks, to run the store. After six months, she started wearing white, meaning she was done mourning over Jody. Because of this men starting persuing her, but she doesn't let them get close.
One day Hezekiah ask to leave work early to go watch a baseball game and Janie agrees, closing the store earlier because of it. Before closing time, a man from Orlando stops to buy a cigarette and ends up talking to Janie about how he missed the ball game.
He even teachers her how to play checkers, and she's happy because no one thought her how to play before. The young man offers to buy two cold drinks. Janie lets him buy her a soda and keeps talking to him. She is worried about how he will be able to return to Orlando without a car. Later she finds out the man goes by Tea Cake. They flirt for a while before he has to head home.
